Gamers Encounter Hate and Harassment Through Text, Voice, and Gameplay Interactions
Online gaming is known for hate, harassment and the normalization of toxic environments that turn many potential players away. But addressing these problems isn't easy. This journal article, published in First Monday by researchers Lynnette Hui Xian Ng, Adrian Xuan Wei Lim, and Michael Miller Yoder, explains the modes in which toxicity appears in online gaming. Text and voice chat can be problematic, but interactions among players within gameplay itself can also become toxic. This article takes a practical focus on how industry practitioners can address toxicity in gaming across modes, from automated moderation to design choices.
